Dear Friends from Spain,

It is with great honor and heartfelt emotion that I welcome you, on behalf of the Municipality of Volos, to a destination unlike any other. Volos is not just a city—it is a living narrative: a place that holds within it the magic of myth, the wisdom of history, and the warmth of genuine Greek hospitality.

My name is Meni Lazarou, and as Deputy Mayor of Tourism, I have the responsibility and the privilege of promoting and strengthening the tourism identity of this exceptional place. With love, commitment, and daily work, we are shaping Volos into an open and sustainable destination, rich in experiences, flavors, images, and emotions.

Volos is a city that looks both to the sea and to the mountains. Nestled at the foot of Mount Pelion—the mythical home of the Centaurs—and embraced by the Pagasetic Gulf, it is the perfect starting point for adventures in nature, coastal escapes, and cultural exploration. Tradition is alive here: in the stone mansions of Makrinitsa, in the cobbled alleys of Portaria, on the mountain trails of Pelion, in the tastes of our local products, and of course, in the renowned tsipouro tavernas of the city.

The gastronomy of Volos is an experience in itself: a journey of flavors accompanied by tsipouro, by the sea, among locals who smile and offer hospitality straight from the heart. Every meal becomes an opportunity—for conversation, connection, and joy.

For history lovers, the legendary ship Argo is more than a myth—it is a symbol of our identity. Soon, the Museum of the Argo will open its doors, telling the epic story of the Argonauts in a modern, engaging way, adding yet another landmark to Volos’ cultural landscape.

Volos is ideal for family holidays, romantic getaways, adventurous exploration, or simply relaxation. It is authentic, true, and unpretentious—and it welcomes you with open arms and a warm heart.

We are here to welcome you, to guide you, and to make you feel right at home. Volos is the new Greek experience you truly deserve to live.

We await you with open hearts!

Welcome to Volos!

Melpomeni Lazarou

Volos: A Mythical Destination

Volos, situated in the heart of Greece within the Thessaly region, stands as one of the country’s largest and most beautiful cities, as well as one of its most significant ports. Built along the Pagasitic Gulf and within a stone’s throw of Mount Pelion, this remarkable destination seamlessly blends the allure of the sea with the majestic beauty of the Centaurs’ mountain, forever connected to the legendary Argonautic Expedition, one of the most celebrated epics in Greek mythology.

The pedestrianized waterfront Argonauton Avenue, lined with charming establishments including the renowned tsipouradika where visitors can savor traditional tsipouro alongside the region’s exceptional seafood mezze, together with the passenger harbor at its western end offering breathtaking sea views, constitute the most beloved gathering and strolling spots for both residents and visitors alike.

The streets of Iasonos, Dimitriados, and Ermou, along with their perpendicular thoroughfares (many of which have been converted to pedestrian zones), form the beating heart of the city center, where the majority of commercial activity and nightlife unfolds, animated by the vibrant student population from the University of Thessaly who breathe life into the city.

Visitors should not miss the Archaeological Museum and the Volos City Museum, which chronicle the area’s entire historical legacy, the charming “Palia” (Old) district in Volos’s western sector, Rigas Feraios Square, the city’s largest, featuring the impressive Town Hall and Municipal Theater building, the expansive Agios Konstantinos Park with its namesake church, and the verdant Goritsa Hill crowned by the Panagia church, offering panoramic views of the entire city.

The emerald Mount Pelion, with its unique villages such as Portaria, Makrinitsa, Agios Vlasios, Agios Lavrentios, and many others, presents an ideal destination for both mountain and sea enthusiasts. Mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding enthusiasts can explore Pelion through its extensive network of trails and routes. At Agriolefkes, near Chania, a ski resort and mountain refuge cater to winter sports aficionados.

The beaches surrounding the greater Volos area rank among Greece’s most beloved coastal destinations. The shores of Nea Anchialos, Alikes, Anavros, Agria, Karnagios, Platanidia, and numerous others attract thousands of visitors annually, offering exceptional landscapes and abundant recreational opportunities.
