The Athens City Museum showcases the rich history of Athens and its people, with a special focus on the period during and after King Otto’s reign. It stands as Greece’s only City Museum.

The museum spans two connected historic buildings. The first, known as the “Old Palace“, served as the residence of King Otto and Queen Amalia for 7 years after the formation of the modern Greek state. The second is an elegant 19th-century mansion. Both were built by the Vouros family, who were the wealthiest Greeks of their time.

Step back in time as you explore the capital’s original palace, which features genuine royal furnishings and period decorations. You’ll discover historical paintings, engravings, sculptures, antique furniture, musical instruments, photographs, coins, maps, historical documents, rare books, memorabilia, and other fascinating artifacts.

Wander through the royal couple’s reception rooms and throne hall, view Greece’s first Constitution and the London Protocol, and journey back to Ottoman-era Athens while admiring the largest known painting of the city, dating all the way back to 1674!
