The National Historical Museum (NHM) was established in 1884 by the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece (HESG). Since 1960 it is housed in the neo-classical building which was the seat of the Greek Parliament from 1875 until 1935. The Museum’s permanent exhibition presents the Greek history from the 15th to the 20th century.

The Museum’s collections include the following: greek flags and war trophies, weapons, helmets and armours, figureheads from ships, sculptures, medals, works of arts made by distinguished artists, seals, coins, memorabilia and personal objects belonging to historical figures, oil paintings, maps, engravings, lithographs, jewelleries, furniture and a large collection of national costumes worn by fighters, politicians, officers, scholars, priests and traditional regional costumes and domestic articles from everyday life.

In this building the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece also houses its Archive of Historical Documents (15th to the 20th century), its Library with rare editions about Greek history, its Photographic Archive and the Conservation Laboratory of the Museum.
