The Industrial Gas Museum was inaugurated in 2013, aiming at protecting and promoting the old gasworks, which used to provide energy and light to the capital for almost 130 years, and is an important part of the modern history of Athens. The museum path tour helps the visitor follow the gas production line, admire the mechanical equipment and learn about the workers’ role in the old plant. The museum experience in enhanced through new technologies and 3D projections combined with historical documents and a rich audiovisual material.
It is a unique monument of industrial heritage, the only one in Europe to have maintained its entire mechanical equipment in situ. As an integral and vital part of the city it is open and accessible to everyone offering a wide range of events: exhibitions, theatrical plays, hackathons, educational programmes and interactive tours for children, adolescents, adults, families and school groups, sleepovers and late night happenings.
