The Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC.
It was founded in 1986, to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions.
More than 3000 objects from the Ancient Cycladic, Greek and Cypriot Art (dating from 4000 BC to the 6th century AD) are exhibited in the four floors presenting the permanent collections of the Museum of Cycladic Art. This museum has one of the most important collections of Cycladic art in the whole world, as well as an impressive collection of Ancient Greek Art. The collection of Cycladic art is a major tourist attraction as the sober marble idols, which symbolize figures of naked people, delight visitors with their simplicity and abstraction. Moreover, these figures inspired many artists of the 20th century, such as Brancusi, Modigliani, Giacometti, Moore and Hepworth.
The Museum of Cycladic Art’s temporary exhibitions focus on archaeology and modern and contemporary art with the aim to familiarize the public with important twentieth and twenty-first century artists and to explore the relations between ancient cultures and modern art. Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Struth, Louise Bourgeois, Sarah Lucas, Ugo Rondinone, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Ai Weiwei, Cy Twombly and George Condo are among the artists hosted.
Don’t forget to visit the Cycladic Café. Inspired by the dazzling Greek light and purity of the Cycladic landscape, the Museum’s Café is a hidden, peaceful oasis in the city’s centre. The lush vegetation and impressive sculptural awning make for a unique patio where one can enjoy a delicious breakfast, coffee, brunch, or lunch.
You can complete your visit with a stop at the Cycladic Shop which offers a large collection of casts from the Museum’s Cycladic and Ancient Greek collections, as well as a carefully curated selection of jewellery, utilitarian and decorative objects, and corporate gifts by modern Greek and foreign designers, all inspired by Cycladic art. It also offers the Museum catalogues, Greek and foreign publications, as well as children’s books and toys. You can also shop online at cycladic.gr/shop and enjoy worldwide delivery.
